Watching the shenanigans in South Florida this week has incited a deep desire to delve into the nonsensical political pandering characterized by politicians vying for mass voters via “Identity Politics.” Because of our location, of course, the “hottest” voting bloc goes by varying misnomers, including “Latinos, Cuban-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, Mexican-Americans, etc., etc., etc…,” and politicians of all persuasion will say what they need to capitalize on this group-labeling dynamic.

As a “White American,” I am as likely to vote for another White neither more, nor less, as a Black, “Latino,” or a Latvian. The fact of the matter is that I’m voting due to the political beliefs of the candidate, not something so trivial as the color of their hair, eyes or skin…or car! Yes, it’s that absurd. How fast he can run, the amount of money he may earn and his ability to produce successful offspring never enters my mind when deciding which candidate will be the best American leader [ For me, that is someone who stresses personal responsibility in as free of a market as is humanly possible; these conditions are universal ones, not parochial concerns that center around, "What will you do for my group?"  ].

So this week it’s the mass-hoarding of Hondurans, Peruvians, Columbians, Mexicans, Cubans, Argentinians, Chileans, and so on; then sticking a dash between the country-of-origin descriptor and the inevitable “American” noun. It doesn’t take much research (and anecdotal evidence is abundant) to get the facts regarding the stark differences in the INDIVIDUALS who make up those specific countries. Indeed, their INDIVIDUALITY is sacrificed at the altar of politics; consider the absurd assumption that all Hispanics are “on the same page” by purveying the relations of INDIVIDUALS in each of those distinct Latin countries. Or you could simply look at relations between and among people in America, Alaska, Albuquerque , or the general relations between and among states, cities, neighborhoods or even INDIVIDUALS in your own house.

The point is, the farther you get away from the diverse, universal quirks of the INDIVIDUAL, the closer you are to adopting the politics of identity….and, as such, you relegate the humanity of each solitary soul to the mass of stereotypes that come to define exactly what a person is. But…country of origin is NOT what defines people, no more than they should be categorized by the color of skin, style of shoe, choice of religion, sexual preference, size of breast, size of penis or the amount of money in their bank account.

Evolution has made the human an EXTREMELY COMPLEX INDIVIDUAL — a social animal that spent hundreds of thousands of years relying on stereotypes in order to advance the species.

This primal adaptation is too easily exploited by “modern” politicians who resort to the base tactic of judging groups by one, politically-created issue. In doing so, the universal characteristics of the INDIVIDUAL are sacrificed and humanity suffers via a reversion to the reliance on stereotype to define who we are “with” or “against.”
